If you feel “stressed out” on a regular basis, you aren’t alone. Many of us feel immense pressure as we try to balance personal responsibilities with jobs, school and a hectic schedule. Stress can leave you feeling unlike yourself, and you get caught up in a loop of worrying. If you’re feeling stuck, Counseling Works is here for you. Through therapy for stress, Frankfort clients can pursue their individual goals and determine the next steps toward a happier, healthier lifestyle. We’re here for you every step of the way.

What Is Stress?

Stress is a physiological reaction to a perceived danger. It involves a complex set of changes in the body and mind that lead to racing thoughts, worrying, a pounding heart and trouble concentrating. Everyone experiences stress differently, and there are many emotional, physical and behavioral symptoms that may indicate a person is under stress:

  • Excessive or uncontrollable worrying
  • Difficulty concentrating or getting things done
  • Feeling stuck or unable to move forward
  • Troubled relationships with family and friends
  • Feeling overwhelmed

The fight or flight response has remained through thousands of years of evolution, as it is ingrained in us to keep ourselves safe. For those of us in today’s world, however, the dangers we face are often less tangible, taking the form of a huge work assignment or a health issue. While some stress is normal and even beneficial in small amounts, ongoing stress can pose issues with our everyday lives. We may have a hard time functioning when we are significantly stressed, and in some cases, it can lead to an anxiety disorder or depression.

Fortunately, stress management is possible. It’s a skill anyone can learn, and with time and practice, you can learn to better manage your feelings and thoughts to maximize your happiness and inner peace.

Stress Management Skills

Therapy teaches clients important stress management skills. It’s a fact of life that we all experience ups and downs, and unexpected twists and turns along our journey called life. While we cannot control the events that take place, we can control how we react to them. Learning how you react to stress and finding strategies to help calm and soothe your distress makes it possible to function better.

Some stress management techniques you can learn in therapy include:

  • Diaphragmatic breathing
  • Recognizing cognitive distortions
  • Becoming free of unhelpful thinking patterns
  • Grounding techniques
  • Learning to manage time wisely
  • Identifying sources of stress and finding ways to mitigate them

Dealing with stress can be challenging, but our team offers compassionate support to help you at every stage of the journey. Therapy is a powerful tool because it helps you cope with stress in a way that works best for you. Let us help you develop stress management techniques that will benefit you for a lifetime.
