Rich Black, Counseling Associate

He/Him

Location: Lemont, Naperville

Life Changes / Adjustments, Men's Issues, Religious / Spiritual

Something feels off. Maybe you’ve lost your sense of direction – in your career, your relationships, your faith, or your sense of who you actually are anymore. Maybe you’re carrying the weight of expectations that were never really yours to begin with. Or maybe you’ve spent so long being the person everyone else needs that you’ve quietly lost touch with yourself. Whatever brought you here, one thing is clear: you’re ready for something to change.

Rich Black wants to help you figure out what that something is – and he’s not interested in just scratching the surface to do it.

“I want to get to know the real you,” Rich shares. “Not just your problems. The worried parts. The insecure parts. The embarrassing parts. The hilarious parts. The inspiring parts. And especially, the strong parts. I know they’re all in there.”

Rich works with teens, young adults, adults, and older adults navigating some of life’s most meaningful – and most challenging – transitions. His top specializations are men’s issues, life changes/adjustments, and religious/spiritual, but he also supports clients navigating career development, parenting challenges, self-esteem and self-worth, and stress management. He is currently completing his M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University.

He has a particular passion for working with anyone who feels stuck, is asking harder questions about who they are and where they’re headed, or is trying to reconcile a complicated relationship with faith or belief – regardless of where they are in life.

Rich believes the relationship between therapist and client is the real engine of meaningful change – and that means showing up as a real person, not a clinical presence behind a notepad. In practice, that looks like a space where laughter has a place alongside the harder conversations, where debating an idea is fair game, and where the process of discovering your strengths can feel as invigorating as it is challenging. Rich doesn’t dismiss anyone’s pain or trauma – but he firmly believes that personal growth doesn’t have to be relentlessly heavy to be real.

Rich draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Rogerian and Client-Centered approaches, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Strengths-Based methods. Therapy with Rich is a collaboration, and he’s as invested in the journey as you are.

He’s not here to hand you answers. He’s here to help you dig until you find your own.

Outside the therapy room, Rich has completed two century bike rides and hiked the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in a single day. In another life, he’d be a standup comic.
