Margaret Kempster, MA, ALMFT

She/Her

Location: Lemont, Naperville

Relationship Issues, Sexual Difficulties, Trauma / PTSD

You keep having the same argument. You feel disconnected from your partner, or from your own body. You struggle to say what you need, or to talk about sex, desire, and intimacy at all. Maybe old family patterns, past trauma, or a hard life transition are still shaping how you show up in your relationships. It’s easy to land on self-blame, but there’s usually more to the story.

Margaret Kempster, MA, ALMFT is drawn to understanding people within the context of their relationships, attachment histories, and family systems. She knows how much those patterns can leave you feeling stuck. As she explains: “Sometimes the ways we learned to protect ourselves continue to shape our relationships long after the original circumstances have changed.”

Margaret holds an MA in Couple and Family Therapy and a Graduate Certificate in Sex Therapy from Antioch University, along with Level 1 training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. She is an Illinois Associate Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (ALMFT) who sees individuals, couples, and families, including young adults, adults, and older adults, at our Naperville and Lemont offices. Her specialties are relationship issues, trauma/PTSD, and sexual difficulties, and she also supports clients with depression, divorce, fertility challenges, and high sensitivity (HSPs).

Margaret’s approach is collaborative, relational, and grounded in attachment and family systems thinking. With couples, she draws on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman-informed work, and Bowen family systems theory to help partners understand each other, communicate more clearly, and rebuild connection. With individuals, she integrates IFS-informed conceptualization, Narrative Therapy, psychodynamic and attachment-based perspectives, mindfulness, and somatic regulation. Together, you’ll make sense of your patterns with compassion and find changes that fit your life.

Whether you want to reconnect with a partner, build a more secure relationship with yourself, or finally talk about sex and intimacy without judgment, Margaret will meet you with compassion and help you take the next step. She’ll help you see how your relationships and past experiences connect to what you’re feeling now, then find practical ways to respond differently and create more choices in your life. You can move from self-blame towards understanding.

Outside of session, Margaret enjoys gardening, tennis (she grew up playing competitively), and playing piano, which she taught herself. She’s also a devoted dog lover, especially of her chocolate lab, Walter.
